You missed an awesome presentation. Luckily, you can view the slides here. If you weren’t there, a quick summary of why you should definitely check it out:

Developing applications for mobile devices introduces a new set of challenges. Some of these challenges include learning new languages required for native platforms, developing for multiple devices, testing considerations, and more.

This presentation will focus on how you can leverage your existing web skills to build mobile web applications. The emphasis will be on developing mobile web applications once and running on multiple platforms using the jQuery Mobile framework. The application profiled – ICE mobile – is a real-time market data and trading app for ICE’s major markets.

Many thanks again for the crew that joined us before for dinner and drinks!!!

As the market continues to heat up this has been a growing conversation within our network: Contract vs. Permanent: what are you really giving up and gaining?

Long gone are the times where it’s commonplace for someone to stay at one company for their entire career. However, do people really leave their job all that often for a contract here or a contract there? The answer in the technical sector – YES.

First what are we really talking about: Permanent positions are full time, include benefits (typically including health care, vacation time, and retirement benefits within the company).  Contract we are referring to contract workers that are in it solely as a contractor –not a contract to hire set up or the “try before you commit mentality.” Often these people have their own corporations set up that they use and are the career contractors.

Permanent employees often have a sense of security in the job they have. During tough economic times many people saw the contractors as the first to go. As a permanent employee it’s common to feel as though the company is investing in you and your growth as an individual. However as we all saw in the wake of the financial crisis there isn’t always a real sense of security.

There is the plus to being a permanent employee that you aren’t in the constant job search mode. Going through interview process is not always fun, nor is everyone a good interviewer. So constantly networking with companies, recruiters, fellow job seekers and former colleagues can sound far to exhausting too many. So what’s the other side of the coin, why contract?

Contracting vs. Permanent comes down to a few main focal points:

  • If you are unable to obtain your own health benefits then contracting is not something I would recommend. However, do a little investigation, look into your spouse’s employer; there might  be more options out there than you imagined and the head ache isn’t as bad as you fear.
  • If you are looking to increase your technical abilities I would recommend contracting. While some companies invest in their developers, I will say on average it’s the contractors that have a more diverse skill set. You are able to pick and choose where you want your career to move and the technologies you want to work with. Not always will you get a project with the coolest technologies but let the recruiters out there know what you love, and they’ll keep you in mind. In addition you have the ability to put high profile clients on your resume that you wouldn’t necessarily be able to join if you were only a permanent employee.
  • Be your own boss of your career. If that sounds exciting—contracting is certainly something to look into. Not only are you able to define and sharpen your skill sets, you also can play the salary/rate game a lot better. Asking your boss for a $10,000 raise usually doesn’t come nearly as quickly as increasing your hourly rate $5 from a project to the next project.

In the end it’s certainly a personal choice. Issues of family insurance, traveling, hours worked vs. hours paid are all issues that arise. In the technical industry it does appear companies and workers are moving more and more towards a contracting kind of world.
