Heroku is a Polyglot Cloud Application Platform that makes it easy to deploy Java, Play! and Scala apps on the cloud. Deployment is as simple as doing a “git push”. This session will teach you how to deploy and scale Java, Play! and Scala apps on Heroku. You will also learn about how to get started with Play Framework.

Our speaker this month, James Ward (www.jamesward.com) is a Principal Developer Evangelist at Heroku. Today he focuses on teaching developers how to deploy Java, Play! and Scala apps to the cloud. James frequently presents at conferences around the world such as JavaOne, Devoxx, and many other Java get-togethers. Along with Bruce Eckel, James co-authored First Steps in Flex. He has also published numerous screencasts, blogs, and technical articles. Starting with Pascal and Assembly in the 80′s, James found his passion for writing code. Beginning in the 90′s he began doing web development with HTML, Perl/CGI, then Java. After building a Flex and Java based customer service portal in 2004 for Pillar Data Systems he became a Technical Evangelist for Flex at Adobe. You can find him tweeting as @_JamesWard, answering questions on StackOverflow.com and posting code at github.com/jamesward.

Agile is changing the world of software development. As a member of a software delivery team, if you don’t start learning what Agile is all about, you are going to get left behind. Understanding Agile isn’t about adopting a new set of words and new set of meetings, it is about how you think about software delivery, how you deal with uncertainty, and what your expectation are about putting products into market.

This month’s meeting will systematically deconstruct your worldview, introduce several essential thinking toold for approaching Agile projects, and explain ghe core set of principles and practices necessary to become a successful Agile test and team member. Mike Cottmeyer is the President of LeadingAgile, a management consultancy focused on safely and pragmatically introducing Agile methods into small, mid-sized and large organizations. In addition to running a growing company, Mike stays active working with many of his current clients.

Mike’s background includes work at IBM, EDS and Arthur Anderson. More recently, he has worked at John Harland, CheckFree, VersionOne, Pillar Technology, and for the past several years, LeadingAgile. His client lists includes small startups and large Fortune 500 companies. Mike lives and worked in Atlanta but supports clients worldwide. When not doing client work, Mike is a regular speaker at various Agile conferences. He is active in PMI and was on the steering committee for the recently launched PMI-ACP certification. Mike also runs the local Atlanta Scrum Meet-Up and volunteers with the PMI Agile Local Interest Group and Agile Atlanta.

After another successful DevNexus, monthly AJUG meetings are back on schedule. This month’s meeting will be a discussion on architects and architecture and will answer questions like; Is there a real difference between a Senior Developer and an Architect? How do Developers become Architects? Do you just have to be even better at delivering software, or are there other skills to learn?

If you’re interested in going deeper into the topic and learning more, please joins us for an interactive session Tuesday, April 17th from 7:00 – 9:00 PM.

Our two speakers, David Lane and Burk Hufnagel, are members of the International Association of Software Architects. David is a V.P. and Senior Architect within SunTrust Bank’s Enterprise Architecture Practice focusing on Corporate Systems, back end systems which support all that it takes to run a bank (areas such as Risk, Compliance, Audit, Finance, HR, Marketing and related systems). He has been with SunTrust since 1998 serving in many capacities from Developer, SME, PM, System Admin to Solution Architect. Prior to joining SunTrust I worked as a developer and network admin for various Novell, Microsoft and Unix networks. David has overseen small and large projects involving J2EE, .NET, mainframe and vended solutions and is also a certified Project Management Professional (PMP). David serve on the Global IASA Board of Education volunteering on both the Architect Training (ATC) and Bylaws Committees which worked to define the Architecture profession along with accompanying IASA training curriculum and certifications. David is currently one of the founding members of the IASA Atlanta Chapter and has served on its board since its official inception over four years ago (having served in every officer position).

Burk Hufnagel is a Solution architect with Research In Motion, working with Business, Development, Operations, and QA teams, to deliver better software faster. Burk is currently on the Board of Directors for AJUG and the Atlanta chapter of the International Association of Software Architects. Like David, he is a founding member of the chapter and has been on the Board since it began. Burk is certified by Sun as a Java Programmer, Developer, and JEE 5 Enterprise Architect, and a contributing author to the O’Reilly books “97 Things Every Programmer Should Know” and “97 Things Every Software Architect Should Know”. In 2010, Burk was voted a JavaOne Rock Star for his talk on User Experience Anti-Patterns.

For those of you are that are new to the AJUG scene, AJUG meetings on the third Tuesday of each month from 7:00 – 9:00 PM in the Perimeter Center area. Our meetings emphasize high-quality technical content and we encourage interaction among attendees.

Join AQAA April 10th for this month’s presentation on, ‘The Cost of QA’. Quality Assurance Engineers, Software Developers, Project Managers and End Users always seem to have a different view on what Software Quality is. CIOs and department heads also have a different view – are the investments I’m making in software quality assurance paying off?

Analyzing the actual cost of quality is a very difficult process to go through. Bottom line, you have to start with a proactive culture to quality assurance and take the time to prove your worth. This presentation will help quality assurance engineers and testers begin to develop the means to calculate their worth to department heads increasing job security and job satisfaction.

Our speaker, Jonathan Taylor, is the Quality Assurance Center of Excellence Leader at CTS where he oversees all contracted Quality Assurance projects and assists in managing testing efforts for all Software Development engagements. His responsibilities also include acquiring and maintaining partnerships with Quality Assurance vendors, identifying the necessary software testing skill sets CTS QA engineers need in order to remain competitive in the market, and supporting the sales team in a sales engineer role.

Jonathan joined the CTS team 5 years ago, bringing a vast amount of Computer Science knowledge with him from Jacksonville Statue University, 3 years help desk support knowledge and 3 years development experience. Jonathan has a deep experience level with Manual, Automated Regression, Performance Testing, Quality Assurance Methodology Consulting, and Quality Assurance Organization Setup and maintains his advanced ISTQB testing certification. Jonathan also possesses experience using Micro Focus, HP, and Microsoft Testing Tools.
